The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative is a common sense way to solve carbon pollution

“PA, the Fourth Largest Climate Polluter in the Country”, is not a statistic that makes me proud to be a Pennsylvanian. Carbon pollution is affecting our everyday lives, from record high temperatures to more frequent and severe storms. Pennsylvania can change this.

The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, or RGGI, is one common sense solution. RGGI, is a bipartisan multi-state program that was started in 2008. Currently, eleven states are part of RGGI and have been successful. RGGI works by setting limits on power plant pollution and lowering those caps each year, which helps lower emissions. Power plant owners also must pay for their pollution which can raise money that can be used for renewable energy projects, energy efficiency programs and more.

RGGI successfully went through Pennsylvania’s regulatory process, including a robust public comment period where many Pennsylvanians supported the program, and got approved. By participating in RGGI, Pennsylvania is projected to reduce carbon emissions by 227 million tons by 2030 and raise a lot of money for the state.
